Urticaria And Its Causes
April 12th, 2010Urticaria is an allergic skin rash also known as ‘nettle rash’ or hives. There are two distinct types: acute urticaria is often caused by an allergy and can last between several hours and six weeks; chronic urticaria persists beyond six weeks. Most hives go away within days to a few weeks. Occasional unlucky individuals will have itches and swellings that come and go over many years. Urticaria is classified as either acute or chronic. Acute urticaria is defined as urticaria that has been present for less than 6 weeks.
Urticaria & Angioedema can be both acute or chronic, the two may develop individually or as is often the case simultaneously. Recurrent episodes of one or both these conditions for less than six weeks would be considered acute, whereas longer lasting attacks (over six weeks) are considered to be chronic. Both Angioedema and Urticaria are often viewed as varying manifestations of the same pathogenic process.
Studies into the cause’s of Urticaria suggest the association of specific genes which could be linked to certain types of Urticaria conditions. Its thought that Urticaria or genes containing the condition may be passed down through family generations. Having the gene passed to you through family puts you at a higher risk of developing Urticaria, known as genetic predisposition, this however does not mean you will develop the condition.
The best way to treat chronic urticaria hives is to treat the itching, as scratching the rash will only prolong and exacerbate the hive outbreak. Calamine lotion is a proven way to soothe the skin and decrease itching. Antihistamines taken orally or applied topically are among the most widespread treatment options for such skin rashes.
There are very few foods which cause obvious allergic reactions, the best known are probably peanuts, but not knowing which foods you may be allergic to is a real problem, a bigger problem than you might imagine.Symptoms of food intolerance’s, when apparent are more often than not delayed reactions, so even if you do display symptoms it can still be difficult to link a reaction with a particular food.

Normally Urticaria is treated with the help of steroids and antihistamines. Steroids work very fast and make symptoms disappear quickly. But these shall not be used for a long time as prolonged use of steroids can cause irreversible damage to the body. Antihistamine, as its name suggests suppress the effect of histamines in the body.
